Writing as Rest: Overcoming Overhwhelm

I did it again. I have spread myself too thin and allowed myself to become overwhelmed with projects. One of the joys of being a creative person is that ideas can come very easily, and often many at once. My challenge in the last couple of years has been to learn to practice discernment and [...]

The Accidental Pumpkin

This lush, green vine popped up out of the blue a couple of weeks ago, and has been unfurling new leaves every single day since then. At first, I was perplexed by the thick shoot that pushed itself up through the mulch near the front door. I hadn’t planted anything there…but it didn’t look like [...]

In the Deep

It’s been sort of quiet around here lately…and for once, it’s not due to procrastination, overwhelm, or just plain “not feeling like it.” It’s because I’m in that space where I’m building something. I’m creating and re-evaluating and nurturing little seedlings and seeing what will come of them.
I’m down in the deep of [...]

Fearful Voices in Creativity, and The Kitchen In My Head

I’ve been thinking a lot today about the fears that come up almost immediately whenever many of us try to embark on a new creative project.
“Don’t do that!  You’ll look foolish!”
“Don’t do that! It’s just a copy of somebody better than you.”
“Don’t do that! They’re going to laugh at you.”
The voices in our heads that [...]

An Empty Teacup

My creative self sent me a message when I wasn’t busy trying to censor it. What is yours telling you?

PSA

In case you couldn’t tell from my abrupt stop with the daily posts, I’ve been suffering from a little bit of burnout lately.
Emotional, physical, and intellectual fizzles.
I’m taking some time to regroup and check back in with myself, and make sure I’m not getting back into old patterns of doing too much all at once.
Hope [...]

Day 17 – Keep Your Eye On The Prize

30 Days of Encouragement for NaNoWriMo (and other writers, too!)

I’m sure you’re tired.  I’m sure you’ve had moments of wanting to delete, shred, burn the whole damn thing.  Don’t.  You are more than halfway through and you are doing it!  Think about the amount you would typically write in a day three weeks ago.  Think [...]

Day 16 – I Like to Move It, Move It

30 Days of Encouragement for NaNoWriMo (and other writers, too!)
One of the best ways to get “un-stuck” is to get moving.   Make sure you take occasional breaks to get up and stretch your muscles.  Going on a 20 minute walk is a great way to stretch your brain, too.  Try not to focus on thinking [...]

Day 11 – A No-Guilt Zone

30 Days of Encouragement for NaNoWriMo (and other writers, too!)
Have you had a really bad day yet?  One where you didn’t come anywhere close to your word count, or worse yet, didn’t manage to write anything at all?   It’s OK.  Take some deep breaths and let it go.  This day is a new day, and [...]

Rebooting.

I’ve been suffering from a case of input overload lately.
With a combination of blogs and news sites, watching a lot of  online videos and (God bless it) Netflix, listening to audiobooks and podcasts… I have come down with a classic case of what Julia Cameron calls “over-reading”.  There is so much information coming at me [...]
